Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Michigan. While new diagnoses and deaths associated with CRC continue to decrease in Michigan, these numbers remain higher in African American men and women compared to white men and women, respectively. CRC diagnosed at the localized stage has a five-year survival rate of 90%, though only 70% of Michigan adults are getting screened at the appropriate time. Regular screening is key to preventing CRC and detecting it in the earliest, most treatable stage.

By promoting community awareness of CRC screening options and implementing evidence-based interventions in medical practices, we can work together to improve screening rates and support the health and wellbeing of Michiganders

Goal: 10% relative improvement in CRC screenings
How Will We Do It?

  • Increase community awareness for early detection:

Share best practices, resources and tailored small media for providers and patients

  • Personalized technical assistance:

Assist  participants to implement evidence-based interventions in practice, including provider reminder, client reminder, provider assessment and feedback systems

  • Leverage EHR & data:

Incorporate the use of electronic health records (EHRs) and streamline processes for assessing patients who are due for CRC screening as well as implementing provider and client reminder systems
