Michigan Hospitals Receive Governor’s Award
Governor Granholm and MPRO Honor Hospital Excellence
Kalamazoo, MI – Sept 10, 2007 –79 Michigan Acute Care hospitals today received the Governor’s Award for Improving Patient Safety and Quality of Care in the Hospital Setting. In addition, 29 Critical Access hospitals statewide received the Governor’s Award for Improving Patient Safety and Quality of Care in the Critical Access Hospital Setting. The Governor presents the award(s) in partnership with MPRO, Michigan’s Quality Improvement Organization (QIO). The award(s) acknowledge excellence in hospital health care quality and safety. Furthermore, the Governor bestowed Special Recognition upon 18 Michigan hospitals as being “top-performers.”
“These award recipients are committed to providing Michigan citizens with high quality health care,” said Governor Jennifer M. Granholm. “The award is testament to the dedication of these hospitals that give patients the quality care they need and deserve each and every time.”
Award criterion aligns with improving care in a number of clinical areas. Hospitals choose from pre-selected clinical areas. These clinical areas are designated as national health care priorities by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Acute Care hospitals individually selected from one or more of the following areas:
- Appropriate Care Measure (ACM) Award
- Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) Award
- AV Fistula Award
- Systems Improvement – Health Information Technology (HIT) Award
Critical Access hospitals focused on intense work in one or more of the following clinical areas:
- Collecting and Reporting Quality Data Award
- Clinical Performance and Reporting Award
- Organizational Culture Change Award
- Systems Improvement - Health Information Technology (HIT) Award
“As Michigan’s QIO, MPRO is privileged to recognize hospitals for embracing patient safety and quality improvement initiatives,” said Debra Moss, MD, MBA, president and CEO of MPRO. Dr. Moss added “The Governor’s Award is the seal of quality that denotes a commitment to excellence in the pursuit to deliver high quality care.”
The Governor’s Award is based on clinical data for the 2006 calendar year. While the Governor and MPRO have partnered to honor hospitals since 2003, this marks the first time that the Governor has recognized the very top performing Michigan hospitals in the areas related to the Governor’s Award for Improving Patient Safety and the Quality of Care in the Hospital Setting and Critical Access Hospital Setting. 18 hospitals were selected as the top performers in each award topic and received special recognition from Governor Granholm.
