109 Michigan Hospitals Receive Governor’s Award of Excellence
Hospitals Honored For Embracing Quality Improvement Initiatives

Mt. Pleasant, MI (October 3, 2006) – For a third year, the Governor in concert with MPRO, Michigan’s Medicare Quality Improvement Organization, today bestowed the Governor’s Award of Excellence to Michigan hospitals that are embracing evidence- based medicine and quality improvement initiatives to advance health care in Michigan.  109 Michigan hospitals received the 2005 Governor’s Award of Excellence for Improving Care in the Hospital, Emergency Department, and/or Critical Access Hospital Setting(s).

“Few things affect our quality of life and the quality of our work more than our good health,” said Governor Jennifer M. Granholm. “It’s important to recognize the hospitals and health care professionals who are making positive strides toward providing our citizens with accessible and affordable health care.”

“In Michigan the Governor’s Award is synonymous with excellence among providers and consumers alike,” said Debra L. Moss, MD, MBA, president and chief executive officer, MPRO.  Dr. Moss added, “It is important to applaud hospitals who are actively engaged in initiatives to provide the right care, at the right time, and improve the quality of life for Michigan’s residents.”

Led by a designated physician champion and project leader at each hospital, the hospitals used proven, evidence-based practices to produce successful measured outcomes in selected clinical areas.  Selected areas include:

  • Acute Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack)
  • Heart Failure
  • Pneumonia
  • Surgical Infection Prevention

The highlighted topics have been designated as national health care priorities by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).  In addition, the award-winning hospitals established multidisciplinary teams for the selected clinical topics.

The Governor and MPRO honored the hospitals with a special ceremony during MPRO’s 2006 QUALITY EXPO conference held at the Soaring Eagle Resort in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, October 3 and 4, 2006.  Earlier this year, the Governor bestowed an award of excellence to 167 Michigan physicians’ offices that demonstrated improvement in patient care in the physician office setting.
