In an effort to recognize significant achievements in health care quality, MPRO and the office of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder honored 188 Michigan hospitals, physician practices, nursing homes and community coalitions with the 2014 Governor’s Award of Excellence on May 9 at the Eagle Eye Golf Course in Bath Township, MI.

The prestigious award recognized participants for their dedication to improve health care quality and patient safety in Michigan. To be eligible for the award, participating providers demonstrated, maintained and continually improved in specific and rigorous milestones and measures.

“Delivering quality health care relies on a commitment to excellence,” said MPRO President and Chief Executive Officer Robert Yellan, MPH, J.D, FACHE. “These award recipients have maintained their focus on excellence and helped set the standard to ensure better health outcomes for millions of Michigan residents.”

The award ceremony was attended by nearly 400 guests. It featured a welcome address by James K. Haveman, director, Michigan Department of Community Health, as well as presentations by Dr. Frank McGeorge, health reporter at WDIV in Detroit and emergency physician at Henry Ford Hospital and Marcia K. Hall, Sharp Coronado Hospital and HealthCare Center, chief executive officer (retired). In keeping with the theme for the day, four videos demonstrating the patient experience across the care continuum were shown throughout the ceremony.

The Governor’s Award of Excellence was developed in 2003. The current award is based upon work from 2012-2014 in the following areas:

The award criteria were based on the National Quality Strategy, Partnership for Patients and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Quality Improvement Organizations’ 10th Statement of Work. The preventive care metrics also align with the Governor’s Healthy Michigan 4X4 plan.
